Paramount Pictures heeft de tweede officiële trailer van Sonic the Hedgehog 3 uitgebracht. Voor Sonic-fans is de trailer een feest van herkenning.

Zo zien we onder meer een Chao Garden, Shadow op een motor met een geweer, en Dr. Eggman's mysterieuze nichtje Maria Robotnik. De trailer bevat ook veel actiebeelden, waaronder een gewelddadige aanvaring tussen Sonic en zijn duistere tegenpool Shadow op de beroemde Shibuya Crossing in Tokio.

De trailer laat ook een gezonde dosis humor zien. Zo vraagt een Japans meisje aan het vosachtige personage Tails of hij "Detective Pikachu" is.

De ruim twee minuten durende video werpt overigens een uitgebreide blik op Shadow the Hedgehog. Dit is namelijk de eerste Sonic-film waarin dat personage - een handlanger van de superschurk Dr. Eggman (gespeeld door Jim Carrey) - zijn opwachting maakt. Shadow wordt ingesproken door Keanu Reeves, bekend van de The Matrix-films.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 draait vanaf 25 december (op Eerste Kerstdag dus) in de Nederlandse bioscopen. De film speelt zich af op enkele bekende locaties, waaronder Tokio en Londen.

De onvoorwaardelijke toewijding van Final Fantasy-ontwikkelaar Square Enix aan PlayStation lijkt steeds meer tot een einde te komen. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth-regisseur Naoki Hamaguchi heeft in een interview namelijk nadrukkelijk zijn wens uitgesproken om de remake-trilogie van Final Fantasy 7 naar meer platforms te brengen.

Die trilogie, waarvan nu twee games uit zijn, zou eigenlijk exclusief voor Sony's PlayStation zijn. Maar in een recent interview met GamesRadar spreekt Hamaguchi zijn wens uit om de trilogie naar meer platforms te krijgen. "Ik wil Final Fantasy 7 en de Remake-serie naar zoveel mogelijk spelers brengen", zegt de regisseur. "We willen de situatie creëren waar meerdere spelers de game in de toekomst kunnen spelen."

Volgens Hamaguchi is de tijd voorbij dat gamers zich massaal naar één platform begeven om een specifieke game te spelen. "Het is veel meer gespreid nu, dus ik denk dat dat waarschijnlijk de reden is waarom onze ceo, Mr. Kiryu, de beslissing heeft genomen om meer richting multiplatform te gaan. Dat is gewoon de richting waarin de industrie opgaat."

Hamaguchi laat in het interview ook weten dat hij enthousiast is over Xbox. "Ik heb zelf een Xbox", zegt hij opgetogen. "Ik vind het een goed hardware-platform. Ik vind de Xbox leuk."

Xbox-gamers wachten al sinds 2020 tevergeefs op de komst van Final Fantasy 7 Remake, het eerste deel van de trilogie, naar hun consoles. Het spel kwam eerder al wel uit voor pc.

Square Enix lijkt de laatste tijd steeds minder tevreden over hun exclusiviteitsovereenkomst met PlayStation. Ze spreken zich regelmatig uit over de teleurstellende verkopen van hun exclusieve PlayStation 5-games. De verkoop van Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Square Enix' grootste release van dit jaar, voldeed bijvoorbeeld niet aan hun verwachtingen.
