NVIDIA DELIVERS SECOND KEY PROCESSOR FOR MICROSOFT'S XBOX
Media Communications Processor Delivers Unparalleled Broadband and Multimedia Capabilities for Next Generation Game Console
SANTA CLARA, CA. - SEPTEMBER 21, 2000 - NVIDIA(tm) Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) announced today that it is supplying the Media Communications Processor (MCP) for the highly anticipated the Xbox video game console under the Microsoft® label. The MCP performs the highly demanding multimedia processing for broadband connectivity, communications, and breakthrough audio capabilities of the Xbox, announced at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose on March 10th.
"The Xbox MCP, also called MCPX, is the first product in a new category of media and communication processors that will power the 21st century broadband digital appliances," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at NVIDIA. "Our vision is to leverage the power of the MCP to transform platforms such as PCs, game consoles, and set-top boxes into 'residential gateways'. The MCP will eventually become a 'network router on a chip', and distribute broadband content throughout the networked digital home."
At the heart of the MCPX, is a pair of high performance multimedia DSPs, executing up to 4 billion operations per second. This is equivalent to the multimedia processing power of a high performance Pentium III. The processing power of MCPX will enable the Xbox to produce theatre quality 3D audio and super realistic 3D sound effects, while connecting to the broadband Internet for networked games. The MCPX is manufactured in advanced 0.15um 7 layer metal process and is the second NVIDIA processor to be featured in Xbox. The combination of NVIDIA's Xbox GPU and MCP will produce never-before-experienced 3D graphics, high definition video, audio, and broadband capabilities. The awesome technology inside Xbox will enable a major leap in videogame experience.
Every day things are looking better for the Xbox... and I bet this will only get better when more info is released :) "21st Century Digital Appliances are going to feature a central processor, powerful graphics processor, and several digital signal processors, all running simultaneously, independently, and very fast," said Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Associates the leading research firm tracking digital media technology. "NVIDIA's MCP is the centerpiece in that kind of an arrangement and establishes a new level of functionality and performance." About Xbox Scheduled for release in fall 2001, Xbox (http://www.xbox.com/) is Microsoft's future-generation video game console that delivers superior graphics, better audio and the most intense, action-packed gaming experiences available. All this is possible because Xbox has at least three times the graphics performance of the newest generation of game consoles. Features will include a 733MHz CPU, a custom-designed graphics chip capable of processing more than 1 trillion operations per second, an 8GB hard drive, 64 MB of total memory, a 3-D audio processor with 64 audio channels, and broadband connectivity for online game play. Xbox uses familiar architecture and DirectX® development tools so game developers will be able to create better games faster. 243 more processors to go. Genoeg nieuwtjes voor de komende dagen dus.
Misschien dat met al deze consoles op het net ook de RPG's een grotere populairiteit gaan genieten zoals Everquest? Je zou denken van wel.
