In de Seattle Times is te lezen dat een hackende Everquestspeler is gepakt. De tiener had zichzelf toegang verschaft tot het Sony netwerk en kon bij alle gegevens.

Zowel de informatie van alle Everquest spelers (adre en, telefoonnummers en characterinformatie) als informatie van medewerkers van Sony. Zo wist de jongen op de thuispc van Brad McQuaid te komen en daar informatie te downloaden over EverQuest 2.

De inbraak kwam aan het licht doordat de jongen alles doorstuurde naar een Sony werknemer. Waarom hij dat deed is onbekend. Sony, die nog niks van de hack had gemerkt, heeft de jongen daarna getraced naar zijn huis en de FBI er opaf gestuurd. Last October, authorities say, the men broke into one of the 40 servers Sony Online uses to operate the game and gained acce to a powerful "superuser" account.

Through that account, they gained acce to the private accounts of Sony employees, a pa word-protected me aging board and "all other customer accounts."

"Acce to these accounts gives the superuser an individual's name, date of birth, work and home telephone numbers, Internet protocol addre and other information," including home addre es, according to an affidavit filed with the warrant.

Moreover, superuser status also "enables the user to have complete administrative controls over the game, including the suspension, banning and unbanning of accounts."
