De promotie van Ko ligt in de lijn van een eerdere uitspraak van CEO Mark Pincus, die zei dat Zynga veel groeimogelijkheden ziet in de mobiele markt. De spelersaantallen van Zynga-games op Facebook bleven het afgelopen kwartaal beneden de verwachtingen, waardoor het bedrijf een verlies van bijna 23 miljoen dollar boekte. Als gevolg hiervan daalde de aandelenkoers van Zynga met 40 procent.
Ko vervangt John Schappert, die als Chief Operation Officer van het bedrijf tot voor kort alle games overzag. Hij maakte ruim een jaar geleden de overstap van EA naar Zynga. Bij EA was hij eveneens COO.
