Xbox Live is beter geregeld dan de online dienst op de PS2. Het is iets waar alleen de ergste fanboys tegenin zouden kunnen gaan. Nu is Sony's dienst voor first-party games zeker niet slecht te noemen, maar het concern lijkt maar weinig invloed uit te oefenen op de diverse third-party games die online zijn te spelen. Dit heeft tot gevolg dat de online ervaring per game, qua kwaliteit, nogal verschilt.
Eerder werd al een halve aankondiging gedaan dat Sony geen centrale dienst zou opzetten, zoals Microsoft dat momenteel doet. De invulling van de online dienst blijkt echter toch niet zo definitief te zijn als eerder werd aangenomen. Sony houdt momenteel een enquête waarin aan beta-testers de mening wordt gevraagd over allerlei eventueel te implementeren online opties. Een lijst die, als aan alle punten wordt voldaan, de online dienst op de PS3 zeker niet zal onderdoen voor Xbox Live.
