Een aantal grote games developers, onder de naam IDSA (zie quote voor de namen), gaan 6 mensen aanklagen wegens het schenden van de copyright rechten. Deze 6 mensen, die overigens elkaar niet kenden en ook niet samenwerkten dus, verkochten illegale kopieen van honderden spellen. Ze kwamen aan klanten via het internet en verstuurden alles met de post. De boetes die hiermee gepaard gaan kunnen oplopen tot meer dan 3 ton per software titel...The complaints were filed by 13 of the IDSA's member companies including Activision, Inc.; Capcom Entertainment, Inc; Eidos Interactive, Inc.; Electronic Arts Inc.; Havas Interactive, Inc./Sierra On Line, Inc.; Hasbro Interactive, Inc.; LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC; Interplay Entertainment Corp.; Midway Amusement Games, LLC; Nintendo of America Inc.; Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc.; and The 3DO Company, Inc. The complaints allege that the six Internet sites, each operated by one of the defendants, offered pirate versions of hundreds of entertainment software products. The lawsuits seek court-ordered injunctions to shut down the sites and monetary damages for the theft of the software. Monetary penalties can be as high as $150,000 per copyrighted pirated work. "We believe these actions constitute willful copyright and trademark infringement,'' said IDSA president Douglas Lowenstein. ``We intend to stop these activities and to send a me age to operators of similar sites offering illegal copies of entertainment software (sometimes called 'gamez' or 'warez' sites) that this conduct will not be tolerated.''Deze acties hebben tenminste meer nut als het uitdelen van posters door de BSA.
