For this reason, we nodded with understanding when a Zombie Game representative told us, “M.O.U.T. 2025 was an awful name. The game has been renamed Shrapnel.” M.O.U.T. 2025 was the heir apparent to the Spec Ops throne, a futuristic squad-based shooter based on a real life militaristic program that suits soldiers up in high-tech outfits complete with GPS positioning and helmets with miniature HUDs. It was going to be a solo and online game focused on strategic action and feature lots of elaborate computerized weapons. Zombie has also been creating a 3D shooter in which people control a large mechanical arachnid with a Godzilla thing going--it was called Shrapnel. The good news is Zombie is still planning to create both games. However, M.O.U.T. 2025 has been granted the name of its sibling product, a new plot and more ambitious game mechanics. The title once called Shrapnel no longer has a name--for the moment. Keeping up with the changes is not as hard as it reads. M.O.U.T. 2025--from this point forward referred to as Shrapnel--will still be a futuristic shooter for the PC and Dreamcast, but the plot has ripened into a cro breed of the film Red Dawn and the game Half-Life. It will chronicle the battle against an organization called the NWTO--the corporate dementia of the future--following a nuclear a ault that wipes out the U.S. in 2025. All that remains are a scattered collection of NWTO-occupied bases peppered throughout the western U.S. Up to 12 gamers will engage in guerilla warfare to oust the unwelcome aggre ors or defend the bases.
