Volgens het Japanse Weekly Gendai heeft Sony de PSX productie stopgezet wegens tegenvallende verkopen van het apparaat. De PSX, een PS2 met DVD recorder, verkocht eind vorig jaar nog 40.000 stuks bij de launch in Japan. Begin dit jaar zakte de verkopen echter in, waardoor Sony de productie nu tijdelijk stop heeft moeten zetten. Een mogelijke oorzaak voor het beperkte succes zou kunnen zijn dat enkele functies zoals breedband ondersteuning en MP3 afspeelbaarheid kort voor de launch werden gecanceld. "A lot of things have been said about the failure of the PSX inside the company, but it was probably due to the unrealistic way that its development was conducted," says an unnamed source close to Sony. "The development [of the PSX] was being handled by the games division and the next-generation Blu-ray Disc development division. The [PSX's] controls were being developed by the games division, while the Blu-ray Disc division was doing the AV parts. But the divisions couldn't work too well together. As a result, the capabilities of the PSX became incoherent, and it ended up as a machine that's neither a game console nor a DVD recorder." Ook wordt de slechte samenwerking genoemd tu en Sony's games divisie en de Blu-ray Disc divisie die de PSX hebben ontwikkeld. De Blu-ray Disc is de mogelijke opvolger van de DVD, met een capaciteit van minimaal 25 GB. Er gaan geruchten dat de Blu-ray Divisie ook mee zal werken aan de PS3 en deze dus een Blu-ray drive zal bevatten.
