Nintendo president Satoru Iwata heeft op een Nintendo conferentie in Tokio de toekomstplannen van zijn bedrijf uiteengezet. Punt dat het meest opvalt is dat Nintendo zich veel minder zal gaan richten op technologische vooruitgang, maar dat het 'primary point' het maken van vernieuwende games wordt. Volgens Iwata kan Nintendo de concurrenten op technisch gebied wel bijblijven, maar gaat dit zo enorm veel geld kosten, geld dat Nintendo niet in dusdanige mate heeft als een bedrijf als Microsoft.

Miyamoto doelde al eerder op ditzelfde punt, door te zeggen dat de GameCube zo'n 7 a 8 jaar mee zal gaan. Iwata bouwt hier in principe verder op.With the products we develop, it's absolutely vital that there's some new surprise in each one that's never been done before. We always have to come up with things that other companies aren't doing. We're taking the same route Yamauchi took because we don't want to find ourselves boxed into the hardware-based way of thinking about things.

Now that Nintendo is led by a group of directors, we will have six people making the decisions Yamauchi used to make by himself. Some people might think this system will dull our direction, but we understand the way Yamauchi thinks and will continue to work with him in the future, so I'm confident we won't have any problems with lagging behind.

Basically, the way we work is to make customers want the games we sell first, then, as a nece ary middle step, buy the hardware along with it. We're not thinking about how we're going to outsell the PlayStation 2 or anything. A lot of people use their PS2 as nothing but a DVD player, so there's not much point in comparing figures anyway. We're confident that we can get people to think that, as far as fun games are concerned, GameCube is the best bet. Kwa online gaming is Nintendo's standpunt duidelijk nog niet veranderd.
