De serie gaat over de Britse geheime dienst, de MI-5, en volgt de levens van deze spionnen, of spooks, zowel op hun werk als privé. In de verschillende afleveringen zie je dus niet alleen hoe de MI-5 omspringt met terrorisme, activisten of overgelopen spionnen, maar ook hoe wordt omgegaan met een vriendin die denkt dat je een computer adviseur bent.
