De Xbox is de enige console die geleverd wordt met een ingebouwde harde schijf. Voor de Gamecube staat er geen in de planning, en is het erg onwaarschijnlijk dat hij komen gaat, en voor de PlayStation2 is hij voor Amerikanen inmiddels verkrijgbaar.

Volgens de man die de Xbox in Europa regelt, Sandy Duncan, is de harde schijf de grootste troef van de nieuwe console van Microsoft. Zo zal Dead or Alive 3 zonder harde schijf nooit zo goed geweest zijn, gezien de game bij de eerste keer opstarten zichzelf grotendeels installeert, wat een paar minuten duurt. Op deze manier zal alles sneller lopen, en simpelweg 'beter zijn'. Ook het spel Ghost Recon zal delen van het spel installeren op de schijf, en zo komen er ongetwijfeld meer games die van deze feature gebruik gaan maken.BUT WHAT WILL MAKE PEOPLE BUY IT?Duncan: Have you seen the games? And you're asking me that? Honestly, it's state of the art. Looking forward, the key element of Xbox - I mean, there's a whole bunch of stuff - but the hard drive is the big secret. It's one of secret ingredients if you want to think of it that way. I mean the hard drive makes games better and it's a standard component: it's the only console that's got it as a standard component. For example, you're never going to see Dead or Alive 3 in the same form as you do on Xbox on any other console. They may at some stage do a DoA3 for PS2. But one of the reasons for that [uniquene ] is that when you install DoA3 it takes a couple of minutes, which is every unusual for a console title as you normally just put them in there and they run: it installs the whole game to the hard drive. Dat je (sommige) games moet installeren komt voor mij toch wel als een grote vera ing, gezien het feit dat Microsoft dit altijd hard ontkend heeft.
