Vlak voor de lancering van twee grote Nintendo games: Metroid Prime en The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker komt winkelketen Dixons met een radicale actie: in alle Dixons filialen moet de GameCube plaatsmaken voor andere zaken. Het van oorsprong Britse bedrijf zegt de verkopen van de spelcomputer weinig hoopvol te vinden, en zich volledig te willen concentreren op de PlayStation2 en Xbox. Mocht de GameCube in de toekomst als een dolle gaan verkopen, bestaat de mogelijkheid dat de winkelketen de GameCube opnieuw in het a ortiment opneemt. Echter, de kans dat dat gebeurd is vrij nihil.

Niet alleen de GameCube hardware verdwijnt uit de schappen, ook de games en acce oires verdwijnen. Commentators have strongly criticised Nintendo for its European strategy - or lack of same - in the past few months, after the company squandered a strong start in this territory with by far the weakest Christmas of all three major platforms. In the absence of decent software support, European consumers are seemingly voting with their wallets, and the performance of the Cube in Europe is by far its weakest showing out of the three major territories.

It remains to be seen whether the GameCube can be rescued by the late arrival of key titles such as Metroid Prime and Resident Evil Zero, which were released in the USA before Christmas; and perhaps more importantly, whether Nintendo takes this serious snub from a major retailer as a sign that it must pull its socks up in this territory.Voor Nintendo kan dit worden gezien als een fikse aderlating in Europa. Dixons is toch een winkel waar veel 'casual' gamers (verreweg de grootste groep gamers) hun spullen vandaan halen.
