The LVT2 had roughly the cargo capacity of 5900lbs, and offered heavy transport services for the marines. Its arc welded sheet steel construction and an unsprung, chained track fixed to the hull worked well in water or soft ground. The marines only asked to get onto the beaches in one piece to do their job, and the LVT2 was their answer.
