Er zijn altijd nog sporten die nog niet jaarlijks door EA in gamevorm gegoten worden. Korfbal, Waterpolo, Schaken, Curling en Flierljeppen zijn daar voorbeleden van. Ook boksen behoorde even tot deze categorie, want de Knockout Kings reeks heeft al sinds 2002 geen nieuw deel meer uitgepoept. EA had namelijk besloten om deze game een zeer grondige makeover, een nieuwe naam, nieuwe engine en nieuwe gameplay te geven. Fight Night is hiervan het resultaat.

Fight Night onderscheidt zich van Knockout Kings door een volledig nieuw systeem waarbij de gekleurde knopjes op je controller min of meer overbodig worden. Meppen doe je met de analoge sticks in combinatie met de shoulderbuttons:Emulating the actual movements of profe ional boxers, the right analog stick on the PS2 and Xbox gamepad dictates how and where a punch is thrown. Snapping the stick in a diagonally-upwards motion, for instance, executes a jab and straight attacks while an upwards fireball maneuver pulls off hooks and roundhouses. Moving the stick downward and then snapping it back up in a half-circle performs uppercuts, and holding the L1 or Left trigger allows you to aim your shots at the body rather than the head. The speed and length of your motion will also dictate the speed and effectivene of your shot as well, and switching from left to right you has to be done properly with the motion of the stick; as the sudden "lost-animation back and forth switch" found in other boxing games like Knockout Kings and Rocky won't let you cheat with speeds not humanly po ible.Een ander uniek punt aan Fight Night is de carrière mode waarbij je zelf een bokser kan creeëren en naar de top helpen. Het spel beperkt zich hierbij niet tot een seizoen, maar tot een periode van wel 20 jaar waarin je bokser steeds ouder, sterker en beter zal worden - iets wat ook grafisch weergegeven wordt. Ook kan je een potje vechten tegen bekende boksers uit het verleden en het heden, waaronder (Copy/Paste) Winky Wright, Felix Trinidad, Arturo Gatti, Sonny Liston en Muhammad Ali.
