Na het bericht van gisteren maakte 3dfx vandaag bekend dat het bedrijf toch door zal gaan met het produceren van videokaarten. 3dfx heeft weliswaar haar fabriek verkocht, maar het gaat de productie uitbesteden aan derden. De Voodoo 5 - 6000 zal niet worden gefabriceerd, maar 3dfx blijft (gelukkig?) alsnog doorgaan met het maken van 3D kaarten in plaats van alleen chipstets.3dfx today confirmed the surprising news that it is indeed dumping the board manufacturing business, and will be reverting back to a model similar to the old days of 3Dfx. The company plans to sell off its Juarez, Mexico manufacturing facility and divert its resources to new technology, and to outsource board production to other companies.

"As we expand into new markets, 3dfx Interactive must focus on its core competency - developing leading-edge graphics technology," said Alex Leupp, president and chief executive officer. "The sale of our Juarez facility will allow us to continue selling add-in-board products to the retail channel, with significantly reduced fixed costs. We also plan to pursue additional retail partnerships to ensure we get our high-performance graphics technology in the hands of our loyal customers in a way that makes the most sense for our shareholders as well."

That new technology is currently called Mosaic. No, it's not a 3dfx enhanced web browser, but rather a new 3D graphics core that 3dfx boasts "50% better performance than today's graphics products, at one-fifth the die size and with one-third the required memory bandwidth." That definitely sounds like 3dfx has been putting that GigaPixel (tile rendering) technology to good use.Grote plannen van 3dfx dus voor 2001 en laten we hopen dat "The old days of 3Dfx" terugkeren, want dan heeft nVidia (naast ATi) ook weer eens wat om mee te concurreren...
