Ondanks alle voorspellingen die op Reuters te lezen waren, kondigt Sony in een interview met IGN aan dat de verwachte prijsdaling voor de Playstation 2 geen doorgang krijgt. De prijsverandering zou volgens verschillende sites op de E3 plaatsvinden.
Met wereldwijd meer dan 28 miljoen verkochte Playstation 2's is Sony echter niet bang voor de lager geprijsde GameCube en Xbox. Vanwege deze reden blijft de PS2 de duurste console in het rijtje van de grote drie."We have stayed firm at $299 when not one single person thought we would, and we have sold almost 10 million units in North America so far, so we're pretty happy with our position right now. I can't imagine that we need to change our strategy one iota."
IGNPS2 believes that While Sony had the jump on the other systems last year by being out one year earlier, that lead time may not count for much when both Microsoft and Nintendo deliver this year with first and third party blockbusters. We asked Sony if Sony will lower its prices before then to stay competitive.
"They [Microsoft and Nintendo] need to lower their prices. They are just not moving boxes in Japan and in Europe. In North America this past holiday season, Microsoft outsold GameCube, a system that was aggre ively priced at $199, and neither of those competitors have had any impact on our sales -- none. Will they affect our busine decisions? No, we feel that they [Microsoft and Nintendo] have a lot of ground to catch up locally and worldwide."Met verschillende nieuwe games die voor zowel de PS2 als Xbox worden gemaakt, heeft Sony niet bepaald een voorsprong met een technisch inferieure en duurdere machine.
