Nvidia heeft vandaag bekend gemaakt dat het samen met Sony bezig is een Graphics Proce ing Unit (GPU) voor onder andere de Playstation 3 te ontwikkelen. Deze GPU zou de voordelen van de GeForce serie moeten combineren met de visie van Sony op next-generation producten om zo apparaten met de Cell proce or krachtige grafische mogelijkheden te geven. "In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously. In this sense, we have found the best way to integrate the state-of-the-art technologies from NVIDIA and SCEI," said Ken Kutaragi, executive deputy president and COO, Sony Corporation and president and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "Our collaboration includes not only the chip development but also a variety of graphics development tools and middleware, e ential for efficient content creation."

Sony en Nvidia zijn een uitgebreide,meerjarige royalty overeenkomst aangegaan. De nieuwe GPU zal de grafische basis vormen van een groot scala aan toepa ingen, van games tot breedband applicaties. In de overeenkomst zijn ook toekomstige consumenten electronica producten van Sony opgenomen, wat aangeeft dat de Playstation 3 waarschijnlijk niet het enige apparaat zal zijn dat van deze GPU gebruik maakt.
