Met alle buzz rond de Xbox, en het feit dat iedereen nog altijd denkt dat de grootste tegenstander Sony zal zijn, houdt niemand rekening met het feit dat de Xbox pas over een jaar zal uitkomen. En dat komt toevallig samen met de GameCube. Waar de Xbox het meest op zal verliezen zijn de games, aangezien nog niet heel veel developers veel vertrouwen in Microsoft hebben. Nintendo heeft hun GameCub (qua hardware) al bijna helemaal klaar, maar wacht toch nog wat langer om meer games tegelijkertijd met de console te kunnen releasen. Ook de prijs zal heel erg tegenvallen, Nintendo probeert juist een hele goedkope machines (rond de 500 gulden) te produceren, terwijl Microsoft juist hele hoge specs in hun box heeft gepropt, dat met een leuk prijsje (meer dan 1000 gulden waarschijnlijk) gepaard zal gaan. Forbes verwacht dat de Xbox vrij veel PC gamers (die Age of Empires en andere producten van Microsoft al kennen) zullen overstappen, maar dat de console markt voor het grootste deel toch bij Nintendo en Sony zal blijven. "They're much better off going up against Xbox with some killer games than rushing out unprepared a few months after PlayStation II," says Matt Gravett, an analyst with PC Data in Reston, Va.

While PlayStation II is getting as much attention for its use as a family multimedia center (and many Japanese consumers are buying it just to play DVDs), Nintendo is positioning GameCube as a simple product for game purists. Fans of the Nintendo platform and titles like Pokémon and Super Mario Bros. tend to be younger than PlayStation customers. Those differences could be lost on consumers if GameCube is released too quickly after PlayStation II's launch on Oct. 26.
