PC.Ign heeft waarschijnlijk als eerste een review van Gangsters 2 on line gezet. Volgens de reviewer is het spel niet de perfecte opvolger van het eerste deel.

De grafische en algemene presentatie is dik in orde, maar de rest van het spel is matig tot slecht. Vooral het geluid is slecht en de gameplay is saai. Het grootste nadeel is dat het spel telkens in de herhaling valt, je moet namelijk steeds dezelfde handelingen verrichten. The story feels tacked on, the characters are weak, weak, weak, and the little attentions to detail such as the gangsters flying through the air when shot and photographers coming by to snap photos of the chalk-outline-littered sidewalks are misplaced. Hothouse Creations would have done better to give the game a more authentic feel and to differentiate the units and structures from each other. In totaal krijgt het spel 5.7/10, niet al te best.
