Alle cijfergeile gamers hebben nieuw materiaal om warm van te worden, want de allereerste Half-Life 2 benchmarks zijn namelijk gesignaleerd en er zullen in de loop van de dag nog meer verschijnen. De eerste cijfers laten onder andere de performance/prijsverhouding zien, iets dat je niet al te vaak tegenkomt. In deze categorie scoort de ATI Radeon 9600 Pro het beste. Let je niet op de centjes en wil je gewoon de snelste kaart, dan moet je wel voor een Radeon 9800 Pro gaan. The Full Precision mode runs 24-bit precision, the way Microsoft's DX9 calls for. This mode runs Half-Life 2 in full splendor - the experience Valve intends for the game to have. There's no doubting that ATI's hardware is clearly superior. Ook hardware site Anandtech had het nodige te zeggen:

Valve is pi ed at all of the benchmarking "optimizations" they've seen in the hardware community;

Half-Life 2 has a special NV3x codepath that was nece ary to make NVIDIA's architecture perform reasonably under the game;

Valve recommends running geforce fx 5200 and 5600 cards in dx8 mode in order to get playable frame rates.

even with the special NV3x codepath, ATI is the clear performance leader under Half-Life 2 with the Radeon 9800 Pro hitting around 60 fps at 10x7. The 5900 ultra is noticeably slower with the special codepath and is horrendously slower under the default dx9 codepath;

the Radeon 9600 Pro performs very well - it is a good competitor of the 5900 ultra;

ATI didn't need these special optimizations to perform well and Valve insists that they have not optimized the game specifically for any vendor.Anandtech laat tevens weten dat men vandaag met hun eigen benchmarks zal komen. Valve heeft ook een presentatie gegeven rondom deze benchmarks die je uitgebreid op deze pagina kunt bekijken. Hierin geeft Valve ook commentaar op de performance van Nvidia kaarten en laat men weten dat de standalone Half-Life 2 benchmark tool op 30 september, ook wel bekend als de Half-Life 2 release date, zal verschijnen.
