Nog meer schokkend nieuws vanuit het 3dfx kampt. Wisten we gisteren te melden dat 3dfx niet meer de Voodoo 5 6000 ging uitbrengen, vandaag meldt 3dfx dat het stopt met de productie van videokaarten. Ze gaan terug naar hun roots en dat betekend dus dat ze chips gaan bakken die ze aan derden gaan verkopen. De OEM markt bleek toch niet zo winstgevend als men gedacht had en zelfs na de aankoop van STB zag het er niet rooskleurig meer uit.The company plans to close its Juarez, Mexico, card manufacturing plant and remove itself from the busine of building the graphics cards that reside in desktop PCs. This is an abrupt switch from the December 1998 takeover of STB Systems, which 3dfx heralded as a move that would put them in charge of their own destiny. Instead, that move -- combined with numerous production delays and supply problems -- has removed the company from its once-dominant position in the industry.
The company says it will now sell its chips to third-party manufacturers, who will create the boards that go in computers. Because 3dfx is in its quiet period (its latest earnings are due next week), officials declined to say how much of a write off would result from the closing of the Mexican plant.
Volgend jaar kan je dus weer 3dfx chips vinden op de kaarten van Creative, Guillemot, Asus, etc. etc. etc.
Nu maar hopen dat 3dfx al hun resources weer puur in het maken van chips steken de performance weer vergelijkbaar wordt met nVidia.
